Now that the busy holidays are behind us, we had to get outside. The weather has been all over the map lately: rain, freezing rain, snow, and -15 to 34 in 48 hours! With a 9 month old in tow, gone are the days that we can just “wing it” or “grin and bear it”. Everything takes a lot more planning, fortunately we have a great park just down the road from us: Moose Brook State Park in Gorham, NH.

Andrew and Lindsay put on snowshoes for the hike while Alden rode in the Ergobaby Carrier. We parked at the office and walked up the Berry Farm Road which is a snowmobile trail. We took our first trail on the left, the CCC Link, and headed off the wide road onto a cozy trail.

The recent snowfall clung to the trees for an intimate scene. The trail gently descends down toward Perkins Brook on a beautifully constructed woods road that was hand built by the CCC. Andrew recently discovered a grown-in section of the old trail and worked with the local mountain bike club to reopen and connect a better route for the trail that brings you closer to the brook.

After connecting with the CCC Perimeter Trail, we looped back up to Berry Farm Road and back down the snowmobile trail. We had to step aside for several snowmobiles to pass us and we ran into a couple of friends that were also out for a short snowshoe hike. They mentioned that some other friends from the mountain bike club were out “grooming” some trails so that they could ride on the snow. We weren’t the only ones to take advantage of a sunny weekend day.

Have had some pleasant hikes at Moose Brook State Park, as well as some treks along that abandoned logging road near the western terminus of Jimtown Road (nearly opposite Spring Rd).

Thanks John. Andrew is hoping to put a new bridge in on the Perkins Path to connect to the CCC Link. That’ll make for a nice loop.

Did you see any tracks other than snowmoble tracks in that nice beautiful snow?
We saw some deer and snowshoe hare tracks. It was a fun time for sure!

Hi! Do you know if the bridge from the Perkins Path to the CCC Trail is still out? Thanks!
The bridge on the far end is still gone, but there is a new bridge built this summer that crosses the brook at the head of a scenic gorge about 1/2 mile from the start of the Perkins Path. The Coos Cycling club is working with the park staff to bog bridge the mucky section of Perkins Path just before the old bridge site, and eventually get the bridge rebuilt. Hopefully next summer.
