A few weeks ago we headed out to Fox Hill Park in Franconia, NH for a short walk in the woods. We parked at the neighborhood lot off of Dow Avenue. We were the only one’s there but the parking lot and trails were packed down from lots of use.
Alden was newly equipped with ice cleats, but they were soon abandoned as he thought Andrew’s strategy of using the ice for sliding looked more interesting. So we slipped and slid down the trail towards the Gale River where we ran into a couple with their dog – whom we presumed lived nearby in the neighborhood.
We found a spot to sit and sip some hot cocoa by the river and then made our way back via the vernal pool trails.
A lovely walk in Fox Hill Park. Be sure to check out our other blogs from this location: Fox Hill, Fox Hill Fun, and Green Frog in Winter. These numerous short walks in Franconia are perfect spontaneous destinations for an afternoon getaway. In this area the Gale River changes from a dramatic mountain stream a mere few miles down from Franconia Notch, to the more placid river you see along Rte. 18 in Franconia Village. The boulders, pools, pebble beaches, floodplain forest, and ledges invite endless exploration.
