Rattle River

We ventured out for a short hike the other day while the weather was almost above freezing! On the way there, Alden fell asleep in the car so we made the short (15 minute) ride to the trailhead into a long (45 minute) journey so he could get a good nap in before we headed out on the trail. We had thought we would try a different trail, but in the winter you never know if shoulders will be plowed and we knew that the Rattle River Trailhead in Shelburne, NH is always plowed off.

As it started to gently snow, we headed up the trail. We were glad that we had opted to put on our stabilizers (studded soles) since there were several areas where the recent warm temperatures had caused water to run down the trail and then subsequently freeze-up from the dropping temperatures. We passed one snowshoeing couple and their dog, but other than that we had the trail to ourselves.

About a mile up the trail we stopped for a short snack break. Alden had his first sip of something besides milk and water – some vitamin water we were carrying. Now that he’s older, we can’t get away with eating and drinking without him wanting some too.

As we made our way back down the trail, Alden fell asleep and we walked in silence with the snow falling and Rattle River bubbling. A pleasant walk for a pleasant afternoon.

  1. I think it is really cool that a walk in the park with a sleeping baby is that terrific, especially with Alden and his wilderness-loving parents! I hang on every word and photo! Go figure!

  2. I always love reading about your hiking adventures, Lindsay. Now you are introducing a new generation to the beautiful woods. Hi to all of your little family! Enjoy, it won’t be long before Alden is running along with you.
